Tamsin Palmer M.A. M.LITT. ADV.DIP. COUNSELLING 31 MAWSON ROAD CAMBRIDGE CB1 2D WHAT IS PSYCHODYNAMIC COUNSELLING/ PSYCHOTHERAPY? This kind of treatment centres on a person’s self-development through emotional and psychological change. Counselling and psychotherapy provide a space in which you can reflect on yourself and your life. It provides an opportunity to discover the ways in which the past is unhelpfully influencing the present, restricting the development of your potential. The aim is to help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself, so that you can think about your life and any problems that are worrying you, in a fresh way. Counselling and psychotherapy provide a confidential professional relationship in which you can explore difficult, painful emotions and experiences with a professional who is trained to help you understand the meaning of feelings and behaviour. Gradually, one to one, a relationship of trust is developed where unconscious motivations and feelings which underlie the conflict and confusion can be brought to light. It is not always an easy process, and calls for a commitment over a period of time. However, the results can help you find your own voice and can greatly improve your life. WHEN CAN COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY BE USEFUL? This kind of therapy is helpful in relation to a great range of emotional or psychological problems. Seeking therapy is not a sign of weakness, quite the opposite - it means you are taking responsibility for your emotional and psychological health and well-being. Therapy helps: When you are uncertain about yourself and your actions and when you suffer from feelings of low self-esteem. When you are emotionally overwrought, depressed, tearful, anxious or angry, and your attempts to cope aren’t working. When you develop worrying physical or behavioural problems which do not seem to have any basis in physical ill health. When you are faced, or have been faced, with a major life stress, such as bereavement, abuse, redundancy, marriage or relationship breakdown, severe illness, or are caring for someone with a long-term illness. When you experience repeated difficulties in close relationships with others, or have concerns about your sexuality or are unhappy in a long-term partnership. Or, it may just be that you have lost your way in life and need help in finding your way forward. CONFIDENTIALITY The therapeutic relationship is a confidential one. Information you give will not be passed on to anyone else. The therapist will always seek your permission if she needs to consult your GP.
